Getting to know... Nikki Roberts, Founder of Braain (Be Ready ADHD, ASD & Special Needs network)

The charity BRAAIN , an invaluable resource for parents and carers of children with ASD and ADHD, was set up in October 2017. We met Nikki at her day job as Head of Communications at Tamba (The Twins and Multiple Births Association) and were so inspired by her we wanted to know more about why and how she had set up BRAAIN. Here Nikki explains how it all came about:

“I met Emma at a positive parenting Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) course. After chatting about the lack of support for families with children with special needs in the area, we decided to set up Time Out Support Group. At one of the first few sessions, Helen offered to help with the group. We had already discovered that there was a huge need for greater support for parents, so decided to expand the support group and developed BRAAIN.”

Sleep and older children! The 3rd and final blog in our sleep series

Written by Claire Burgess, Family Consultant.  Babies and sleep is a topic which is discussed a lot - it is expected that our youngest children won’t sleep well / through the night in their first few months, but often our older children can develop sleep issues for various reasons, which can leave parents at a loss as to how to resolve them!

'Fussy', 'picky', 'choosy' eater!

Written for Doddl.com by Claire Burgess, Family Consultant. The term fussy eating (or sometimes picky eating) is commonly used to describe when children start to refuse food, but I would prefer to use a more positive reference, and this would be ‘choosy’ eating.  So, do you have a choosy eater?  Have you suddenly noticed that your child, who has eaten pretty much everything up until now is now refusing food that they have always eaten?  Or have they narrowed down their choices to only eating certain foods, perhaps just beige food such as pasta, potatoes etc (which is very common), or only eating certain vegetables (if any) or things such as cucumber/tomatoes etc.  If so, it might help to reassure you if I say that it is completely (and developmentally) normal for children to go through this stage.

The next stage - Real food! Tastes, textures and flavours!

Written for Doddl.com by Claire Burgess, Family Consultant. Very often when we start to introduce our babies to food we think that it must be bland, basic and not very much fun!  That is absolutely not the case as we want to show our babies the wonderful world of food and how they can take time to explore, taste, touch and smell all of the amazing foods we have!

The importance of eating out with your children!

Written for Doddl.com by Claire Burgess, Family Consultant. Pre-children, you and your partner may have enjoyed eating out in various restaurants, trying out different foods and experiences. I’m sure that you viewed these outings as fun and social experiences – we tend to be brought together with our friends and family by food and the occasion of it. Post-children it is very common that eating out in different restaurants (other than those which have the ‘child friendly’ signs) are a thing of the past and where you think you will go once the children are ‘much older’!!

Make mealtimes about the experience - not just the food!

Written for Doddl.com by Claire Burgess, Family Consultant. When we are feeding children it can bring about a great deal of emotion for us. There is overwhelming joy when the child/ren have eaten something that we have been slaving over for hours to make (there is no feeling like it!) or sheer disappointment and frustration when they sit and either refuse to eat what you have made or pick away at it saying “I don’t like it”. The emotions that we experience when this happens can often lead to irrational responses and a feeling that we want to give up and just stick to pasta and grated cheese for the rest of their lives!

The Early Riser! (Part 2 of 3 sleep blogs)

Written by Claire Burgess, Family Consultant.  Early waking can be a very common issue at this time of the year - the mornings getting lighter earlier can trigger our little ones in to thinking that it is time to wake up! However, for some children it can happen at any time of the year and can be a very difficult thing to resolve.

Is your baby ‘sleeping like a baby’…?

Written by Claire Burgess, Family Consultant.  What does ‘sleeping like a baby’ actually mean? The way that this phrase is used suggests that a baby who ‘sleeps like a baby’ is sleeping soundly straight through the night until the morning, but we all know that this is very often not the case for babies, particularly in the early days!
